The sunflower is an annual plant that is native to America. It was commonly thought that the sunflower was first found in Southeastern America about 5000 years ago. There is some evidence that it was first domesticated in Mexico in 2600 B.C.E. The plant has a flowering head that resembles the sun. The flower heads have many individual flowers which mature into seeds.
Sunflower products include:
• Sunflower butter
• Sunflower seeds that are eaten either raw or roasted as snacks
• Sunflower oil used in cooking that from some varieties contain more monosaturated fats than olive oil
• Livestock feed
