It’s Spring!

Written by Monica Joyce, MS, RD, LD, CDE: Shop smart. Shop in season. You’ll get the best bargains and best taste. Fresh fruits and vegetables are here to stay for the next several months with more to choose from than ever.

Spring’s best pics include apricots, strawberries, cherries artichokes, asparagus, chives, leeks, lettuce, peas, green onions and radishes. Fruits and vegetables that are eaten in season tend to be more flavorful and contain more vitamins and minerals.

It’s also a good time to think about planting a garden. Whether you have room for a big or small one if you choose a few vegetables or fruits that you really like you can enjoy them all summer. Not enough room ? You can grow some plants in containers.Herbs can work well in containers. I’ve already started with some small basil plants. Rosemary and oregano are easy to grow in the garden and it’s fun to go out and pick some to sprinkle on a meat or in a sauce.

So start thinking about eating healthy and even growing your own. You won’t be disappointed.
