Written by Monica Joyce RD, LD, MS, CDE: I love learning about the unusual health benefits of foods. The Nov. 18 column People’s Pharmacy in the Chicago Tribune discusses the effect of Asafortida (“hing”) powder on flatulence. Asafoetida is a resin from the underground portions of the plant Ferula asafoetida. Hing is used in Indian cooking and is also a traditional Indian herbal medicine.

Indian herbal medicine uses it for lung conditions and digestive disorders. A reader wrote in to say it helped him with a problem with flatulence. Pharmacognosy, July 2012 says it contains compounds that prevent blood clotting and lowers blood pressure. Journal of Ethnopharmacology, March 8, 2011 states it has antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity and can lower blood sugar.
Be sure to check with your physician before trying this or any new remedies.
